How Ditching Labels Liberated Me In Life And Business
Finding Beauty in Multi-Passionate-Ness
MARCH 22, 2023
Do you struggle with defining who you are? I did for years as I navigated multiple career paths & personal interests 👇
When I graduated college with my architecture degree in 2015, my sights were set on channelling my passion for design as an “architect”. But after 3.5 years in the industry, I found myself stressed, dissatisfied & deeply unfulfilled (enter: ‘quarter life crisis’).
2018: After 9 months of soul-searching, I found my way into a start-up agency in Boston where I stepped into doing graphic design & social media. Here I was a “graphic designer”.
2020: But then after 2 years of that, came ANOTHER wave of stress, dissatisfaction & unfulfillment. This is when I took up freelancing full-time and stepped into “business-owner”.
2023: Today I’m at a crossroads once again. But this time, I’m not switching careers to wear another label to define who I am or what I do (my studio is here to stay 🏠) This time, I’m pausing to SYNTHESIZE all parts & pieces of me, both past & present.
Instead of continuing to use labels to define my expertise or scope of work, I’m celebrating all that I’ve navigated to get me to where I am today — a multi-passionate creative with a deep drive for digital and handmade artistic expression. All rooted in my past experiences as an architect & graphic designer, & celebrating my current interests as an artist & biz owner.
Ditching the “safe” & well-contained labels has been one of the most liberating feelings, in both business & life, allowing me to own, accept, and find deeper gratitude for all of the seasons I’ve navigated (bc ultimately, they have all led me here)(and HERE is a really, really good place to be).
Are there any areas of your life where you’re limiting yourself to just one label or title? What would it look like if you gave yourself permission to be more than just one thing? How can you leverage your past experiences to strengthen your current position and make you more unique?
This year I’m planting my flag in the ground and calling to celebrate more multi-passionate-ness and shedding more labels 🚩Who’s with me?!
